Valdeorras

Our Valdeorras wineries not only have a wide variety of full-bodied flavours, both red and white, but also offer a wide variety of tastes for all palates. And it is that, this fruity drink offers full-bodied flavours. The tradition of Valdeorras as a wine region dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. Aided by the Mediterranean-Atlantic microclimate, the Romans planted vines and built wine presses, creating a culture, now secular, that revolved around vineyards and the production of exquisite wines, whose virtues were extolled by the pilgrims who followed the Camino de Santiago on their way to Santiago de Compostela. And it is thanks to its history that we can ensure that we offer only the best Valdeorras wines, as it guarantees not only age, but also the best finish.

Valdeorras Winery

Valdeorras, in the province of Ourense, the easternmost region, is located in Galicia, near the province of León, in northwestern Spain. The geological history of the region has meant that a large part of its soil is made up of slate, quartzite and schist.

In the last 2,500 million years, Valdeorras has undergone numerous climatic changes and glacial phases that left their mark on the mountainous areas, transforming it into a unique natural landscape, the formation of fluvial terraces and steep and narrow riverbeds. The wealth of natural resources and the fertility of its soil have made Valdeorras an ideal place for people to settle throughout the centuries.

Proof of the ancient presence of man here are the megalithic remains that can be seen in the Enciña da Lastra mountain range, as well as cave paintings and the petroglyphs of Valdegodos, Petín and San Esteban de A Rúa Vella.

Denomination of origin Valdeorras

Valdeorras has a great diversity of soils due to the area of vineyards it holds; 1300 hectares. This allows us to guarantee that it is one of the best Valdeorras wines since, thanks to the breadth of its facilities, they can guarantee its quality.

The River Sil crosses the region from East to West, generating a symmetrical valley and thus guaranteeing Valdeorras wines: steep slopes on the left bank and gentler slopes on the right bank, mainly in the Council areas of O Barco, A Rua and Vilamartin.

Other rivers with less flow are the Xares, Bibei, Cigüeño and Casaio; in O Bolo, Larouco, Rubiá and Carballeda they don’t form valleys, but they have enough slopes for the cultivation of the vine, and terraces can be seen along the banks of the Bibei and Xares, thus offering one of the favourite Galician wines.

These south-facing soils have always been considered ideal for growing vines, guaranteeing one of the best Valdeorras wines, as they are less fertile, but drain well, guaranteeing a more moderate yield and grapes that ripen well.

Nowadays, viticulture, and all that it entails, is governed by a Regulatory Council, a body that decides which wines are granted Denomination of Origin Status, taking in viticulture the municipalities of A Rúa, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco, O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá and Vilamartín.

The production areas occupy a large part of the Sil, Xares and Bibei river basins. The climate is drier here than in the rest of Galicia, providing a perfect continental-Atlantic microclimate for Valdeorras. The average temperature is 11ºC and annual rainfall ranges between 850 and 1,000 mm.

Plurivarietal wines such as Rosal and Condado do Tea, incorporate other varieties of the subzone such as Loureira and Treixadura, respectively. These wines have an intense aroma, with a slight acidity, and are complex in the mouth, where the influence of the varieties of the area provide differentiating nuances with plant and floral sensations in the nose provided by linalool (rose) and hexanol (vegetable).
